Great DaneGreat Dane is more popular as ‘Apollo of all dogs’. When Asiatic people invaded Spain and Italy Gaul in 407 A.D., they brought powerful dogs like mastiffs along with them. These dogs received great admiration in Germany for defeating wild boars and bears. This led to selective breeding of the dog. Irish Greyhounds were bred with this dog. The result was an agile, beautiful, thin and large dog, which got its name Great Dane. People may adopt this dog for its unique capabilities as a watchdog, hunter and carter.

Body Description:

Great Dane has narrow long head with a frontal stop. It has as long nasal canal. The dog possesses a long muscular neck. It has straight front legs. The breed has round feet and muscular thighs along with dark and short nails. The tail is medium sized. It has dark round eyes that display an intelligent expression. It has long, cropped, erect ears. The dog has shiny, short and close-fitting thick hair. Its coat is in colours such as mantle, fawn, merle, black, brindle, harlequin and blue.

Body coat of this dog requires combing and dry shampooing. Owners need to use a brush having firm bristles for combing its coat. The nails need proper trimming.

Weight and Height

Male dogs weigh 54-90 kg, whereas bitches weigh somewhere between 45-59 kg. As for their height, male dogs are 30-34 inches, whereas bitches are 28-32 inches.

Great Dane is kind, sweet, playful and socialising. It loves the company of human beings. The dog barks less. It may turn aggressive depending upon circumstances.
