Estonian HoundThis dog breed originated from Estonia. Till 1914, only English Fox hounds and Russian Polish hounds were used for hunting purposes. Later on, cross breeding of these dog breeds gave rise to local hounds. In, the era of 1920’s Finnish hounds came into existence. Cross breeding of Estonian hound took place, when a law for the same was passed in 1934. Estonian hound is a result of the mixes between Swiss hounds, Beagles, Bern Hounds and Luzern hounds.

Body Description:

Estonian hounds are neither too long nor too short. The dog displays a muscular body, as it has well-developed muscles. Structure of its bones is strong without any skin folds. It has drooping ears. Coat is shiny, evenly rough and short. Undercoat is developed weakly. The tail displays thick hair. Eyes of this dog breed are brown with dark cornered eyelids. It has black patches and the tail tip is usually white.

As coat of this dog is short, it is easier to comb. It requires bath only if necessary. The dog sheds averagely

Weight and Height

This dog breed usually weighs 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 pounds) and can grow up to 17 to 21 inches tall.

Nature and Temperament Estonian hound appears happy always. The dog is smart and stays calm. It is never aggressive. It always has a friendly approach. It needs early socialisation and exposure to a newer environment. This dog gets along well with other breeds of dog. It adores the company of cats too. The dog craves for human attention. It hates loneliness and positions itself comfortably, while watching television with its owner. It has a beautiful voice.
Activity

It needs a minimum of one and half hour’s of daily walk. It enjoys running in the forests. This dog stays well indoors and gets comfortable in a yard that is of average size.

Average lifespan The average lifespan of Estonian hound is 12 to 15 years.
