pet guide - English Setter

English SetterEnglish Setter has its origin in France. Breeders bred the dog with French Pointer and Spanish Pointer. Later, Great Britain introduced this dog to its country. Here, Sir Edward Laverack, a dog breeder, perfected the dog. People used this dog for hunting only when Llewellin, an English breeder created hunting strains of it.

Body Description:

English Setter is elegant and slim. It has a long head that further has a stop at the front. Its square muzzle is almost half the length of its head. The dog has brilliant large eyes. It has a dark nose. Its pendant ears display velvety tip. The tail of the dog is straight. Its chest is deep.

Its coat is flat that is not curly. Hair on its underbelly, chest, tail and ears is soft and feathery. Those, which are introduced to dog shows, have heavier and longer coat as compared to the ones used in fields. Owners need to look after the grooming of such dogs.

Weight and Height Male dogs are 24 to 27 inches tall, whereas female dogs are 23 to 26 inches tall. The male dogs weigh 25 to 36 kg, whereas female dogs weigh 20 to 32 kg.
Nature and Temperament English Setter is mild mannered and enthusiastic. It mixes well with people. It barks often and is a perfect watchdog. It gets along well with cats and other dogs. The dog is a quick learner. Owners need to attend to this dog frequently or else it might act tyrannical.
Activities English Setter remains quiet indoors. It appears lively when owners let it off the lead. The dog loves running. As such, owners need to train it two hours daily. A big yard with fencing is best for this activity.
Average Lifespan Life expectancy of the dog is 10 to 12 years..
