Canaan DogThe Israelis used to bred Canaan Dogs in the 19th century. However, many Bedouins still employ this dog breed to herd, guard and control their sheep. It has good and quick leaning ability, and at times also used as a messenger and a war sentry, tracker, mine detector and even as a steer for the visually challenged people.

Body Description:

The Canaan dog breed is muscular, well balanced and small-to- medium size. The pierced ears have a rounded tip, broad base and are set tall. The head of this dog is quite blunt wedge shaped with a petty but clear stop. The nose is slightly skewed. Eyes are almond in shape and are of chocolate brown colour with gloomy rims, which go well with its fur colour. It comes in a variety of colours such as white, brown, black or in a spotty combination of white, brown or black.

Weight and Height

The maximum height of this dog breed is 20 to 24 inches (in male) and 19 to 23 inches (in bitches) and the maximum weight is 45 to 55 pounds (in male) and 35 to 45 pounds (in bitches).

Nature and Temperament

This primitive breed dog is known for being highly loyal, intelligent and extremely devoted. They well bond with their owners and are very much watchful and alert for strangers. They make wonderful guard dogs, but tend to bark greatly. They do not like to be left alone for a long period. They bond well with children. They are suitable for those homes, which have a same gender cat, dog or other household pets. In addition, they are not recommendable for a lazy or inactive owner.

Health Care In general, the Canaan Dog is one of the healthiest breeds around with no known hereditary problems. As guardians of the breed, breeders have a responsibility to ensure that the breed remains so, not just for today but for future generations.
Lifespan The average life span of Canaan Dogs is around 12 to 15 years.
