AkitaAkita originated in the island of Honshu, Akita in Japan. It is the national animal of Japan. Akitas were used as imperial guard dogs and fighting dogs. They are good companions for deer and bear hunting. They have special abilities that allow them to hunt in deep snow. Helen Keller bought the first Akita to America during the Second World War

Body Description:

Akitas are the largest of Japanese Spitz-type breeds. They are powerful, solid, well proportionate and distinctive looking dogs. They have a heavy and blunt triangle head, whereas the muzzle is short and strong. Ears are small, erect and tilt forward towards the line of neck. The tail is carried high and curls over the back. They have webbed cat like feet, which makes them excellent swimmers and allows them to walk in deep snow

Akitas have double coat composed of harsh and waterproof outer coat. The undercoat is thick, soft and insulated. Pure white, red, brindle and sesame are some popular colours for Akita.

Weight and Height

Male Akita measures up to 22-26 inches and female measures up to 24-26 inches. Male dogs weigh around 75-120 pounds and females weigh around 75-110 pounds.

Nature and Temperament Akitas are an impulsive and obedient. They are very affectionate and caring towards their family. Akitas are famous for intelligence, courage and fearlessness traits. They are first class guard dogs and need firm training from a young age. They have aggressive tendencies, when in company of other dogs or animals and need supervision, when in presence of children of other families. Akitas are not excessive barkers.
Activities

Akitas need regular and moderate exercise to stay fit. They love long daily walks and playing with Frisbee

Average lifespan Akita has an average life of 10-12 years.
