| Should I Buy A Pet?
Deciding to buy a pet is a big decision in anyone’s life and a pet should not be purchased on a whim as a lot of thought needs to go into your decision. There are many factors to consider before you make such a decision and below we highlight the five most important questions that we feel you need to ask yourself to help you decide whether to buy a pet or not:
1. Why do you want a pet?
The first thing that you need to decide is why you want a pet and what has led you to the decision of wanting a pet. It is important to ensure that you are buying a pet based on genuine reasons and not because you are getting pressure from other sources (such as family members) to buy a pet. The decision has to be entirely your choice.
2. Are you ready for the commitment and do you have the time to invest?
Pets take up a lot of time and commitment as well as energy on your part. Dependent on the type of pet that you choose they can live for up to 20 years and you have to be prepared to give a commitment to the welfare and care of that animal throughout that time.
3. Can you afford to take care of your pet?
Pets are an expensive member of the family as not only is pet food expensive but veterinary bills need to be taken into considerations. Pets need to be taken to the vets regularly to ensure that they are healthy and unfortunately we can’t predict when they may become unwell or need veterinary care. You therefore need to ensure that this is a cost that you can cover either upfront or by taking out relevant pet insurance. Also, when you want to go on holiday you may need to put your pet in a boarding home, so this is another expense that needs to be considered.
4. Is your home suitable for a pet?
You need to consider whether your home is pet-friendly and is suitable for a pet. For example, if you live in a flat with no garden then it is probably unsuitable for you to have a dog or cat as a pet. Also, if you live in rented accommodation you will need to check your rental agreement to see whether you are allowed to keep any pets.
5. Have you done your research?
If you do decide to buy a pet it will then be important to research what type of pet is suitable for you. You should look closely at such factors as your lifestyle and your family size; and if you have a family you will need to decide which pets are suitable for children, adults or both. By doing research on the pet beforehand it will ensure that you have all the facts and information about that animal to make an informed and appropriate decision of whether to purchase or not.
These five questions should always be considered before you decide whether to buy a pet.
It is also recommended that if you do buy a pet that you consider purchasing pet insurance as this can help hugely with any unforeseen vet costs while giving you peace of mind that your pet will be cared for and you will be financially covered.
